Judge William R. Greer, Jr. served 30 years in the Maryland Army National Guard as a traditional Guardsman. In addition to being deployed to Afghanistan in 2011-2012, he was activated for multiple State emergencies operations, including during snow storms and hurricanes, and provided support during multiple presidential and governor inaugurations.
Judge Greer began his military service when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant upon graduation from college in 1987. He joined the Maryland Army National Guard as a platoon leader in D Company, 121st Engineer Battalion (Cbt) located in La Plata, Maryland He served in various positions in the Engineer Battalion, including Company Commander, Operations Officer and Battalion Commander.
After battalion command, he served in the Construction and Facility Management Office in Baltimore, Maryland. Judge Greer served as the Operations Officer and Executive Officer for Troop Command from November 2007 through April 2011.
In 2011, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with the 29th Infantry Division, Afghan National Security Forces Development Team as the Deputy Director, Current Operations. While in Afghanistan, Judge Greer was assigned the additional duty as the Executive Officer for the International Security Assistance Force’s Joint Incident Assessment Team. In this capacity, Judge Greer was responsible for coordinating the work of a combined Afghan / Coalition Assessment Team that was charged with assessing various incidents within the joint operations area.
Upon return to Maryland, Judge Greer was selected as the Operations Officer for the Joint Staff of the Maryland National Guard and served in that capacity during Superstorm Sandy and the snow storm of 2014. Judge Greer assumed command of 58th Troop Command / Joint Task Force Maryland, the largest brigade command in the Maryland Army National Guard, in December 2014. He stayed in command until his pending retirement in May 2017. He officially retired on June 30, 2017.
During his tenure in the Maryland Army National Guard, Judge Greer graduated from the Joint Task Force Commander’s Course, the Army Command and Staff College, Combined Armed Services and Staff School, Engineer Officer Advanced Course and Engineer Officer Basic Course. He also completed the Leadership in Homeland Security Course at The John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
Judge Greer’s military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Afghan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, State Active Duty Medal and Parachutist Badge.
