Judge William R. Greer, Jr. has served as a Circuit Court judge in Charles County since January 2017. He has impressed his fellow jurists and attorneys by quickly being able to handle all matters that come before him, including serious criminal cases, major civil cases, and family law, with fairness and compassion. That’s a reflection of his diverse experience prior to becoming a judge, which included concurrent careers as a practicing attorney and the insight he gained serving our state and country in the Maryland National Guard. His military and legal experience has instilled in Judge Greer a deep commitment to ensuring the due process rights of all concerned in case he adjudicates, and an abiding respect for the rights of individuals as he applies the law in each case before him.

In 2016, Judge Greer was reaching mandatory retirement age after 30 years of service as a part-time soldier in the Maryland Army National Guard, just as new position was being created on the Circuit Court in Charles County. Judge Greer saw the newly created position as a unique opportunity to continue his public service to the residents of Charles County, and to bring the skills, judgment and experience he gained in 30 years as an attorney and soldier to the service of the judiciary.

.Judge Greer applied for the newly created judgeship and went through a vigorous vetting process. Judge Greer was interviewed by various bar and legal associations; in fact, the Charles County Bar Association—the local attorneys who best know his expertise and judgment— gave him the most votes of “Well Qualified”, the highest category of recommendation among all the applicants. Receiving the overwhelming support of the lawyers he regularly interacted with, was both honoring and humbling. Judge Greer was interviewed by the Judicial Nominating Commission for Charles County and was one of only three applicants whose name was forwarded to the Governor for consideration.

Judge Greer is a resident of Nanjemoy, where he lives with Sue, his wife for 22 years. Both Judge Greer and Sue are Charles County natives and have strong family and community ties in the County. Their son, Michael is a graduate of Lackey High School and is currently in his second year at Clemson University.  Their son, Trent is currently a junior in high school.
